One Third of Grocers Bet Big on Smart Shelf Labels
Sanjana B | September 25, 2023

As grocers aim to modernize their stores, many are eyeing smart technology to enhance the shopping experience by providing shoppers with detailed product information right on the shelves.

According to a PYMNTS Intelligence survey, 32% of grocers believe that consumers are highly likely to switch to other retailers if they don't have access to digital price tags or smart shelf labels.

This demand presents an opportunity for various businesses, from third-party aggregators to wholesalers, to offer this technology.

Grocery tech leader Instacart, for example, introduced tags that integrate with electronic shelf labels, allowing consumers to locate items, check dietary information, and see if a product qualifies for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments.

Additionally, wholesaler United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) has launched its Smart Shelf Tags, equipped with QR codes, enabling grocers to offer consumers more information about products and foster transparent communication between suppliers, retailers, and shoppers.

UNFI aims to connect consumers with the values and stories behind the brands they purchase through this technology.
