Delft Design students Joep van Gils and Inès Peeters have developed an app concept allowing passengers to pre-order in-flight meals during online check-in.

This solution aims to reduce food waste and save fuel by minimizing the need for extra meals onboard. By allowing passengers to choose their meals in advance, airlines can cut down on discarded food—about 0.7 kg per person per flight—thus decreasing fuel use.

The app, which was tested with positive feedback from 40 students, offers travelers more control and a sense of luxury. It’s a cost-neutral, practical step toward making air travel more sustainable and enjoyable.
